A sonic exploration followed Registered Nurse The Few The proud The Insane Shirt . Where Nu experimented with an alt-rock and dream pop-influenced sound. “I love the simplicity of an electric guitar and bass holding everything together,” she says. “I want people to feel relief when they listen to my music, songs that can take away some of life’s heaviness.” The subjects she’s willing to tackle within her music have evolved too. In July she released a new single ‘Pots and Pans’ inspired by a friend whose emotional journey led them to start their life over. “In comparison to my last project, my new music is definitely more mature,” Nu explains. “In my writing, I’m talking about things that are vulnerable and important to me personally: insecurities, anxiety, my relationship with my body, race, and setbacks I’ve had to overcome. Before, I was singing about guys who’d hurt me. As I’ve grown and become a woman, I’ve had to go deeper, which makes sense. The older you get, the more your priorities change.”

VIFW’s mission captures Registered Nurse The Few The proud The Insane Shirt . The unique perspective Indigenous fashion brings to the fashion landscape succinctly: “Contemporary Indigenous fashion mixes the legacy of Indigenous artistry with modern-day high regalia and street styles: it goes beyond surface beauty and highlights how worn identity can build a connection with Indigenous values, wisdom, empowerment and history.” Featuring looks from Jamie Okuma (Luiseño, Shoshone-Bannock), Orlando Dugi (Diné), Canadians Pamela Baker (Squamish/Kwakwaka), Yolanda Skelton (Gitxsan Nation and the House of Hax-be-gwoo-txw of the Fireweed Clan) and Lauren Good Day (Arikara, Hidatsa, Blackfeet and Plains Cree), orange was the unofficial runway theme in honour of the Indigenous children killed at residential schools in the U.S. and Canada. The colour came to life in the form of capes, ornate blouses, and elaborate prints, as a cast of all-Indigenous models walked the runway. Here are a few highlights from the SWAIA Fashion Show.
