In June 1935, in the Greyhound Hawaiian Shirt 12 capital of Honolulu a tailor named Musa-Shiya Shoten published the first advertisement for Hawaiian shirt designs in the newspaper. He is Japanese and his real name is Koichiro Miyamoto. Nearly a year later, Musa-Shiya continued to advertise a shirt selling “Only for Tourists! Aloha shirts are available or made to order.” Dolores Miyamot, Musa-shiya’s wife and co-worker, recalls that in the 1930s she herself made shirts for the then-popular actress Shirley Temple. She also talked about another famous actor of the period, John Barrymore (grandfather of actress Drew Barrymore) who had come to the couple’s tailor shop to ask for a shirt from scratch. Japanese Kabe Crepe fabric – a shirt design that has never been requested by any customer before. The Musa-Shiya couple are also considered the “natural parents” of today’s Hawaiian shirt.
